Manhunt Underway After Shootings Target Minnesota Lawmakers

A statewide manhunt is underway in Minnesota following a pair of shootings early Saturday morning that left one current and one former Democratic state lawmaker targeted. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are searching for 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, who is suspected in both incidents.

The first shooting occurred around 2 a.m. in Champlin, where State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot inside their home. Both were hospitalized and remain in stable condition following surgery. Roughly ninety minutes later, police responding to the incident conducted a welfare check at the Brooklyn Park residence of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman. Officers reported being fired upon by an individual impersonating law enforcement. Upon entering the home, they discovered Hortman and her husband Mark deceased from gunshot wounds.

Authorities believe the same suspect is connected to both shootings. A vehicle recovered later in Sibley County contained a latex mask, police-style lights, and what officials described as written materials indicating premeditation and a list of additional individuals. Officials have not yet released full details about the documents or a definitive motive.

Governor Tim Walz condemned the attacks and authorized additional law enforcement resources to assist in the search for Boelter, who is considered armed and dangerous. A $50,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his capture.

Public officials from both parties expressed concern over the violence. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar described the events as deeply troubling and emphasized the need for protecting public servants. President Donald Trump also commented, urging unity and calling for a swift resolution to the case.

Investigators are continuing to examine the suspect’s background and possible motivations. Officials say there is no confirmed threat to the general public, though security has been increased at several government facilities.

As the investigation develops, Minnesota residents and leaders are grappling with the implications of the shootings, which come amid broader national conversations about political safety and public discourse.
