Caddo Commissioners readdress the Bernie Sanders Resolution issue

By: Ark-La-Tex Staff Writer

During the working session held on June 30, 2025, the Caddo Parish Commission voted 7 to 5 to ratify a special resolution recognizing U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders following his visit to Shreveport earlier in the month.

Senator Sanders brought his national "Fighting Oligarchy" tour to Shreveport on June 21, as part of a series of events nationwide focused on addressing the role of wealth and corporate influence in American politics. The resolution, introduced to commend the senator’s advocacy, drew mixed reactions among commissioners and sparked concern from the Louisiana Attorney General’s office.

A key point of contention was procedural. The resolution had not been included on the publicly posted meeting agenda at least 24 hours in advance, as typically required under Louisiana’s open meetings laws. This prompted a review by Attorney General Liz Murrill, whose office expressed concern over whether the process adhered to legal transparency standards.

Commissioners John Atkins and Grace Blake spoke against the resolution, citing both procedural concerns and disagreements with the resolution’s content. Despite their opposition, a majority of commissioners voted to uphold the resolution.
